Geratech Zirconium Beneficiation Ltd. is a South African-based company owned by the IDC (Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa), TIA (Technology Innovation Agency of South Africa), Swedfund and private shareholders. To date, approximately R250-milion has been jointly invested in the project by South African and Swedish institutions and individuals to develop and commercialize zirconium beneficiation technology with the objective to establish such an industry in SA.

Briefly about the shareholders:


The Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) is a national development finance institution set up in 1940 to promote local economic growth and industrial development. The IDC is owned by the South African government under the supervision of the Economic Development ministry. The IDC's primary objectives are to contribute to the creation of balanced, sustainable economic growth in South Africa and on the rest of the continent. The IDC promotes entrepreneurship through the building of competitive industries and enterprises based on sound business principles.

The IDC currently holds a 30% share in the company.


The Technology Innovation Agency of South Africa (TIA) is a South African Government Agency tasked with exploiting the existing body of knowledge at universities and public research institutions and channeling it effectively towards the development of technology-based industries. TIAs objective is Stimulating and intensifying technological innovation in order to improve economic growth and the quality of life of all South Africans by developing and exploiting technological innovations. TIA holds a 34% share in the company.


Swedfund is a bilateral Development Finance Institution (DFI) that belongs to the European Development Finance Institutions (EDFI) network, which is wholly owned by the Swedish government, reports to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department for Management and Methods in Development Collaboration (MFA-USTYR). Swedfund co-finance with Swedish partners in sound investments situated in emerging markets of Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well as the non-EU countries of Eastern Europe. Swedfunds mission is to promote the sustainable economic development of the countries in which they invest. Swedfund holds a 9,2% share in the company.

Private shareholders

Private shareholders include the founders and seed capital providers of the company. Two of the founding shareholders are operationally involved and serve on the Company's Board of Directors. 26,1% of the shareholding currently resides with private shareholders.

The balance share of 0,71% is held in an employee trust.
